Alec was beginning to hate patrolling even more than he usually did. Before it had been worry for his siblings that had made him dislike his duties, but now there was more than that altering his feelings. Each night he went out was time that he could be spending with Magnus. The warlock rarely complained, knowing that Alec couldn't leave his family unprotected, but there were times when he knew that Magnus probably would prefer it if he had a safer lifestyle. Or at least one with better hours.
Tonight, they'd had no problem tracking down the demon they'd been warned about, killing it with a precision that had come from years of fighting together. Afterward, he'd headed considered going back to Magnus' apartment, and then remembered the look in Magnus' eyes. There had been hurt there... and loneliness. If it had been almost anything but a demon, he probably would have let the others deal with it themselves, but that hadn't been an option.
Guilt still darkened his thoughts as he tried to think of a way to make it up to his boyfriend. It was too late to go out. Actually, it wasn't. It was New York, there was always a party somewhere, but he doubted either one of them was in the mood to deal with crowds.
Instead, he went to the Institute with his siblings to strip off his gear, putting on one of the outfits Magnus had coaxed him into buying that had somehow ended up in his old room instead at the loft, and then headed for Taki's for some take out. On the way to the apartment, he picked up some ice cream for dessert since he never quite trusted the stuff at the diner after seeing some of the things Simon ordered. He also bought a bouquet of brightly colored flowers as an apology to go with their midnight date. It was probably cheezy and Magnus would think it was silly, but maybe it'd make him smile... and make up for Alec having to leave.
When he was about a block away, he juggled food and flowers so he could text his boyfriend.
Are you still awake?
