overprotectivehunter: (Curious)
A full night of restful sleep had done wonders to help Alec heal. The last of the soreness that had accompanied his injuries had turned to an easily ignored ache. The weakness and dizziness from the demon poison had left him completely, which meant that his siblings had announced that he was fit for hunting... Whether he'd wanted to or not.

Not that he really could complain. He was a Shadowhunter. He was supposed to patrol and kill demons. But Jace's antics had taken on a more dangerous edge than usual, forcing them out on hunts that Hodge never would have approved of. Maybe if Alec had been of age, he could have overruled them but his protests were ignored as 'big brother worry' instead of genuine concerns.

His parabatai's need to kill whatever monster that they came across did little to improve Alec's initial impressions of Clary, knowing that heartbreak was the reason for Jace's attitude. Most of the time, he tried to be supportive, knowing what it was like to love someone that he couldn't have, but others...

Even if he was slowly offering his heart to Magnus, he couldn't help resenting the girl who was tearing his family apart. He also couldn't completely ignore how he was barely missed whenever he'd spent time with Magnus. It'd made things easier but it still hurt that he was ignored by the people who were supposed to care and appreciated by someone the Clave said he shouldn't love.

It was a tangled up mess that wasn't made any simpler by Jace's suicidal hunts. Returning to the Institute covered in mud and less pleasant things, Alec glared at his parabatia and stalked off to his room, knowing neither one of his siblings would disturb him for the rest of the night. After he showered, he made sure his bedroom door was locked, feeling slightly guilty as he noticed the time. Magnus had said he could call whenever he wanted and Alec wanted to believe that was true.

Flopping down on his bed, he grabbed his cell phone and hit the speedial, smiling to himself at how often he talked to Magnus when he had rarely spoken to anyone before. As soon as Magnus answered, Alec spoke, not bothering with the usual greeting. "My parabatai's an idiot."

It was a terrible idea and Alec knew it. He should be in bed, trying to recover from the demon poison and the wounds he'd suffered not slowly limping up the stairs that led to the High Warlock of Brooklyn's apartment. The fact that he'd had to sneak out of the Institute proved that it was a terrible idea. It was an idea that Jace would think up so obviously it had to be either idiotic or suicidal... or both.

Probably both, Alec decided as he leaned against the wall of the stairwell, trying to gather up enough energy to take the last few steps and walk to Magnus' door. At least he hadn't had to wait outside until the warlock had decided to let him in. Before Alec had even tried the buzzer, one of the other tenants had noticed him and let him inside.

That had to say something about Magnus' visitors if no one looked twice at someone who probably looked like death warmed over. But despite how pale and shaky he was, the wounds were healed and the poison cleaned out of him. Magnus had been thorough about that but it still took energy to heal and Alec was at the end of his.

But he'd had to say thank you to Magnus even if his timing was probably terrible. He would have died if the warlock hadn't come to the Institute and healed him... and from what Isabelle had suggested, Magnus had stayed by his bedside so nothing could harm him. Alec didn't remember much. Pain and fear and screaming for his family, although Izzy said he'd barely made a sound. But he did remember beautiful golden eyes that were filled with concern.

Magnus deserved his thanks even if it took every scrap of strength he had to walk those last steps to the door. Which might be completely possible since he felt dizzy as he knocked, leaning against the frame as he waited for Magnus to answer.

Tonight was a night to celebrate their victory and think fondly of those who were lost. Both Valentine and Sebastian were dead and for the first time that Alec knew of, Downworlders and Nephilim had fought together. They had even been allowed to remain in the city as alliances were created. It was a chance for new beginnings, something Alec hadn't realized he needed until he'd introduced Magnus to his parents.

His mother was polite and didn't seem surprised by his preferences. His choice of boyfriends and that very public kiss might have been more of a shock, but at least Magnus hasn't dressed in one of his usual party outfits for the meeting. Robert... That reaction hadn't really surprised him. It hurt, but it was expected and Alec knew that it'd be a long time before his father was okay with his choices, if he ever was.

But Alec refused to let that bother him. Not when this was supposed to be a happy time for them all, remembering those lost fondly and saving tears for later. The grief would eventually, not that it completely left him, but for now he wanted to share Idris with Magnus. He hadn't spent much time in Alicante, or the countryside nearby, but he knew of a quiet spot where they'd be away from the party and be able to see the stars. And Magnus had probably seen less of Idris than Alec had.

When he was sure that his family wouldn't notice, Alec caught his boyfriend's hand, leading Magnus away from the lights and the questions, guiding him through the twisted streets until they were away from the city and anyone that might interrupt.
