It was a terrible idea and Alec knew it. He should be in bed, trying to recover from the demon poison and the wounds he'd suffered not slowly limping up the stairs that led to the High Warlock of Brooklyn's apartment. The fact that he'd had to sneak out of the Institute proved that it was a terrible idea. It was an idea that Jace would think up so obviously it had to be either idiotic or suicidal... or both.
Probably both, Alec decided as he leaned against the wall of the stairwell, trying to gather up enough energy to take the last few steps and walk to Magnus' door. At least he hadn't had to wait outside until the warlock had decided to let him in. Before Alec had even tried the buzzer, one of the other tenants had noticed him and let him inside.
That had to say something about Magnus' visitors if no one looked twice at someone who probably looked like death warmed over. But despite how pale and shaky he was, the wounds were healed and the poison cleaned out of him. Magnus had been thorough about that but it still took energy to heal and Alec was at the end of his.
But he'd had to say thank you to Magnus even if his timing was probably terrible. He would have died if the warlock hadn't come to the Institute and healed him... and from what Isabelle had suggested, Magnus had stayed by his bedside so nothing could harm him. Alec didn't remember much. Pain and fear and screaming for his family, although Izzy said he'd barely made a sound. But he did remember beautiful golden eyes that were filled with concern.
Magnus deserved his thanks even if it took every scrap of strength he had to walk those last steps to the door. Which might be completely possible since he felt dizzy as he knocked, leaning against the frame as he waited for Magnus to answer.
